Strong Ireland Team Set to Compete in Edinburgh

Irish athletes travel to Scotland this weekend to compete at the Edinburgh International Meet as a final preparation for the Irish Open Championships* from April 1st to 5th at the Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre. The Meet takes place at the Royal Commonwealth Pool from March 10th – 12th.

Amongst the thirty Irish athletes are Olympians Ellen Walshe, Daniel Wiffen, Darragh Greene and Finn McGeever. Walshe has been returning to great form after a period out of the water due to illness. The Templeogue swimmer impressed at the McCullagh International two weeks ago with a 2:12.48 200m Individual Medley swim, just half a second off her Irish Record of 2:12.02. Wiffen has also been in great form, winning the 800m and 1500m Freestyle at the British University Championships as well as earning male swimmer of the meet.

The team will be led by National Centre Head Coaches John Szaranek, Kevin Anderson and Steve Beckerleg, with National Centre Limerick Coach Jade Murphy assisting and Mary Corby as team manager.

*The Irish Open in April will serve as a qualification meet for a number of Summer International competitions including World Championships, European U23 Championships, European Junior Championships, European Youth Olympic Festival and Commonwealth Youth Games.
