Swim Ireland Pool Operations

An Island of Swimmers

About

Swim Ireland, as the National Governing Body for all aquatic sports on the island of Ireland, has significantly broadened its remit in recent years by stepping into the direct operation of swimming pools. This strategic move is a key component of our Strategic Plan 2022–2026, which envisions “An Island of Swimmers” and positions swimming not just as a sport, but as a vital life skill accessible to all.

Central to our strategy is the inclusion of infrastructure as a key pillar for the first time in its history. This reflects a shift from solely promoting participation to actively shaping the physical environments where swimming takes place.

Our Commitment

This expansion into pool operations allows Swim Ireland to directly influence the quality, accessibility, and programming of aquatic facilities, ensuring alignment with national health, education, and sporting goals.

Innovation

Innovative infrastructure projects, such as Pop-Up Pools, which offer flexible, cost-effective solutions to increase access to swimming facilities.

Collaboration

Collaborating with local authorities to rejuvenate aging pool infrastructure and introduce sustainable operating models.

National Swimming Strategy

Supporting the National Swimming Strategy 2024–2027, which aims to provide every person in Ireland with the opportunity to swim, regardless of age, ability, or location.

Pools Currently Operated by Swim Ireland

Swim Ireland has begun operating a select number of pools, bringing our expertise in aquatic programming, coaching, and community engagement to local facilities.

Swim Ireland has pioneered a solution designed to address the lack of accessible swimming facilities across Ireland. These mobile pools, 12m long, heated to 30°C, and housed in weatherproof structures are deployed in underserved communities for 12-18 months at a time, offering a full suite of swimming programmes.

In partnership with Dublin City Council, Swim Ireland has revitalised this community pool in Dublin’s North East Inner City. The facility now offers a wide range of programmes including Learn to Swim classes, Parent & Toddler sessions, and popular Schools and Community Programmes. The pool serves as a hub for inclusive aquatic activity, engaging schools, clubs, and families across the area.

Following extensive refurbishment funded by the Department of Sport and Limerick City and County Council, Swim Ireland has been appointed to operate this vital facility in the heart of Askeaton. The reopening, scheduled for the end of October 2025, will bring professional management and a renewed focus on aquatics for all and community engagement to West Limerick. This marks a significant step in Swim Ireland’s operational footprint and commitment to rural regeneration.

Looking Ahead

Swim Ireland’s involvement in pool operations is expected to grow, with further partnerships likely as part of the implementation of the National Swimming Strategy. Their approach combines data-driven planning, community consultation, and innovative facility models, ensuring that swimming becomes a lifelong, accessible activity for all. This expansion not only supports Swim Ireland’s strategic goals but also contributes to broader societal outcomes, improved public health, enhanced water safety, and stronger community cohesion through sport.
