The 2023 Irish Open Diving Championships was held at the Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre, Dublin from Friday, 1st to Sunday 3rd December. Swim Ireland welcomed over 160 divers to the Sport Ireland Campus during the three-day competition, many of whom visiting from overseas to compete in Dublin. It was an Irish diver who stole the show as Jake Passmore set a new Irish Senior Record in the Platform event – breaking a long-standing record that stood since 2013.
Kicking off his 2023/2024 season, Passmore went into the competition looking to continue his remarkable form following an impressive 2022/2023 season, where he won a World Junior silver medal, made his senior Irish debut at the 2023 European Games in Kraków, Poland and featuring on the world stage at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, performing remarkably in both competitions – Passmore was recently awarded Male Performance Pathways Athlete of the Year at the 2023 Swim Ireland Awards.
Passmore went into Saturday’s Platform event with great confidence and hopes of breaking the current Senior Record of 205.9, set by Tony Miller at the 2013 Irish Open Diving Championships. The City of Leeds diver put on a stunning display to smash the existing record and win gold, scoring 342.95 points, setting his first Senior Record of his career. Passmore will now turn his attention to the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha next February, the last 2024 Olympic Games qualification opportunity for Irish Divers.
