Swim Ireland Teachers will introduce, develop and consolidate the eight Core Aquatic Skills.
These skills are made up of Entries and Exits, Submersion and Aquatic Breathing, Rotation, Floatation, Streamlining, Sculling, Movement and Propulsion and Co-ordination and Balance, and will lay the foundation for the development of stroke technique.
Swimming Teachers will also develop the four swimming strokes and create opportunities to ensure a lifetime of safety in the water for both adults and children.
This course develops your knowledge, skills and abilities as an assistant swimming teacher. It will enable you to actively support a qualified swimming teacher in the delivery of a planned learn to swim session.

- The responsibilities of a Swimming Assistant
- Working under the supervision of a qualified Level 2 Swimming Teacher
- The swimming pathway, fundamental movement, core aquatic skills and component parts of strokes
- Scientific principles of swimming
- What makes up a lesson plan, equipment and communications skills
- How to identify anxiety and use of motivational techniques
- Providing assistance in and out of the water

This course develops your knowledge, skills and abilities as a Swimming Teacher. It builds on the Level 1 Assistant Swimming Teacher qualification and gives you the skills to independently deliver swimming lessons.

The Swim Ireland Level 2 Swimming Teacher qualification will allow you to access the Autism Spectrum Disorder Swimming Teacher Qualification (ASDST)
The course will equip Level 2 Swim Ireland Swimming Teachers with the knowledge and practical skills to plan and deliver lessons for children and young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Course content
- Understand Autism Spectrum Disorder in the context of swimming.
- Be able to plan to deliver lessons to swimmers with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
- Develop swimmers with Autism Spectrum Disorder through the use of appropriate equipment, resources, teaching methodology and communication skills.
- Demonstrate motivational techniques to swimmers with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
- Develop the health and safety awareness for you and your swimmer in and out of the water, during the swimming lesson.
- Be able to evaluate your own performance.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is an essential element of being a successful Swimming Teacher. It is vital to keep up to date with the most current practices and thinking in relation to swimming and aquatics.
CPD helps with career progression and advancement, broadening your knowledge and equipping you with the skills to specialise in specific areas.
It also provides confidence and credibility by ensuring the professional standard of Swim Ireland qualifications are at a consistently high level.
The Register of Aquatic Professionals (RAP) replaced the traditional Coach/ Teacher Licensing from 1 January 2024.
Swim Ireland qualified coaches and teachers will renew their position on the Register each year on a calendar basis (1 January – 31 December).
RAP recognises the professional nature of the qualifications gained by Swim Ireland coaches and teachers, along with the ongoing development through CPD and maintaining of the Vetting/ Access NI and Safeguarding requirements.
Coaches and Teachers can opt-in to being publicly featured on the Register of Aquatic Professionals on Swim Ireland website, to support employment and other engagement opportunities.
Coaches/ Teachers are required to maintain active vetting and safeguarding credentials.
