The opening of the 2024 European Para Swimming Championships started yesterday with Team Ireland on the podium on the opening evening of the seven day competition. Róisín Ní Riain claimed a European silver medal in the 100 Butterfly S13 Final with a time of 1:06.32.

The National Centre (Limerick) swimmer was the first Irish swimmer to feature at the meet, advancing to the final from her heat in first place with 1:06.70. Ní Riain returned to the blocks yesterday evening, shaving 0.38 seconds off her morning swim to claim the European silver medal in Madeira.

Speaking after the final Ní Riain said: “I think maybe I would have liked the time to be a little bit faster you know, I’ll have to go back and have a look and see what I can improve going forward for the rest of the year and leading into the summer.”

Limavady swimmer Dearbhaile Brady also featured in this evening’s final session. Brady faced stiff competition in her 100 Backstroke S6 Final, finishing a European 6th in a time of 1:50.58. Brady will return to action on Day 3 of competition for the 200m IM Heat.

Ní Ríain, who will look to continue her impressive form, is the sole competitor for Team Ireland on Day 2 of competition, will take to the European Final stage to compete in the 100 Breaststroke Final at 19:43.
