Just weeks after the Irish Open Championships and Olympic Trials, Irish athletes now turn their attention to Belgrade, Serbia for the European Aquatics Championships where twenty Irish athletes will feature across swimming and diving events.
Paris 2024 qualified Danielle Hill will lead the team but will be without her fellow individual qualifiers for the Games with Daniel Wiffen, Ellen Walshe and Tom Fannon opting to compete at Sette Colli in Rome (21st – 23rd June) while Mona McSharry will race in a meet closer to her Tennessee base.
The Championships will see newly minted Irish Record holders Conor Ferguson (100m Backstroke), Max McCusker (100m Butterfly) and Shane Ryan (100m Freestyle) take to the blocks, as well as Tokyo Olympians Darragh Greene and Finn McGeever.
The team also includes a group of young swimmers who were in fine form at the recent Irish Open Championships including New Ross’ Evan Bailey who set new Irish Junior Records in the 100m and 200m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly, and National Centre Limerick’s John Shortt who lowered his 200m Backstroke Irish Record.
The Championships will see senior international debuts for National Centre Ulster’s Lottie Cullen and National Centre Limerick’s Cormac Rynn and Jack Cassin, while Nathan Wiffen, Uiseann Cooke and Oisin Tebite compete at their first senior long course competition. Ellie McCartney, Eoin Corby and Niamh Coyne complete the team, the trio with European and World Championships experience already.
The opening morning of racing will see McCusker open proceedings in the 50m Butterfly. Cullen makes her Championship debut in the 200m Backstroke. Green, Cooke and Corby swim the 100m Breaststroke Heats and Ireland will have an entry in the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay Heats.
Diving gets underway from Tuesday with Clare Cryan taking to the 1M Springboard.
